A compromise

Dear Editor

Re: N.Z. Prime Minister defends visa policy

I would much rather have visa-free entry than the wild goose chase involved with the quota system (which is never filled).

This quota was put in place because the NZ government in 1981 feared that Samoans would flood into NZ without visas and then overstay.

I suggest---as a compromise (because I am all about solutions to today’s problems)---that instead of a general visa-free entry, Samoans could apply for a visa-free (business category) entry (renewable every 3 years) so that Samoan business people who need to go to NZ for their work do not have to go through the rigmarole of applying for a visa every single time they need to go to NZ.

This will facilitate better business relationships between Samoa and NZ and may even help increase Samoan exports to the land of the long white cloud.
