…And learn other skills

Dear Editor

Re: Vaimoso leaders offer youth a solution

There should be national conscription of every able-bodied man and woman who is unemployed to spend 3 months a year learning disaster management and disaster preparedness as well as essential survival skills in the event of a catastrophic natural disaster like we had with cyclones Val and Ofa.

No pay but they can be stationed at various D.M.O. stations around Samoa, be given uniforms, and spend their 3 months doing basic training in disaster management and preparedness.

Especially those youth in Apia who are now growing up buying food for their traditional Sunday umu instead of actually making the umu like a real Samoan man.

For another month of the year, they can be assigned to various companies around Samoa for work experience. Learn some useful training skills for their lives so they can at least be useful to their villages outside their normal duties as taulealea or they can use those skills to apply for jobs.
