Health Commission of Inquiry report hugely disappointing

Dear Editor,

Re: M.O.H and N.H.S. Merger

The Commission of Inquiry report on the N.H.S./M.O.H. merger and Nurses grievances makes for some depressing reading.

I for one was looking forward to a thorough, comprehensive, balanced and constructive report to somehow address and untangle the mess at the N.H.S./M.O.H.

Sadly to say, I was hugely disappointed.

The report failed to adequately address the root causes of the failure of the separation with particular focus on the national health indicators and the historical basis of what prompted the separation 11 years ago what happened in the interim and what were the core events that triggered the re-merge.

Of critical importance also should have been an in-depth analysis of the historical working relationship between the medical and nursing fraternity the last 50 odd years.

Until and unless these core issues are identified, dissected, analyzed and debated the re-merge is doomed to repeat itself.

In short, the report was high on emotion and low on substance and contains some inflammatory – maybe even defamatory - statements.

As someone who has been involved in the health industry the last 35 years I can categorically say the situation is not as bad as it has been made out to be. God Bless Samoa!
