Govt. not forcing relatives to send money

Dear Editor,

Re: Money gives you right to vote

There is no question that the economy benefits from remittances of Samoans overseas to their families as well as other investments.

In economics, it is called the “multiplier effect”.

However, please tell me how exactly the “government is forcing our relatives overseas to send money to us in Samoa for help”?

The government is not “forcing you.” There is no law stating overseas Samoans must send money to their families. These decisions are for the family and the family alone.

In reality, there is absolutely nothing the government can do if overseas Samoans stop sending money to their relatives. These remittances are just the normal duties of a Samoan to his/her parents and family and even their village.

Your family rewards their family members overseas with matai titles and blessings. The reward is a say in family affairs and eventual a stake in the leadership of the family.

If overseas Samoans want to influence the elections, it is probably best to influence their families in Samoa.
