Well that didn’t last long

The solemn words uttered by our PM in 2015 were obviously just for that moment in time.

Addressing the nation, citizens were told in a number of ways by the Minister of Finance that spending needed to be cut, belts tightened, careful counting of the money rah rah rah was what lay ahead for us in order to get our debt under control etc.

“Great,” thought everyone including world finance organizations who had been variously warning and preaching a similar message for more than a year.

But wait.

Come the New Year and a new day, we are presented with a 15-storey building plan for the flea market space which was fortuitously cleared – first by the fire and then leveled and cleared with almost 100,000 tala insurance money received and spent by government.

How lucky is that you may say?

So once again, on reclaimed land near Apia’s waterfront, we get yet another ugly building, built by guess who, to match the other one across the road which features paddling pools instead of car parking.

And wasn’t this building the pipe dream of the disgraced, former Minister of Finance, who wanted us to be like Geneva or some other European city far, far away?
