Days before Christmas, Tile Afasene is desperate for a job.

The 19-year-old says he is looking for a job and he wished he’d found one so he could help his family at this time of the year.

“It’s the season of thanksgiving and that I should thank my family for taking care of me throughout this whole year but it is hard to show that when I do not have a job,” he said.

“No money to buy them something nice and show them I appreciate them.”

The 19 year old added that buying his family gifts is not the only reason he wants to work.

He also wants to contribute to the family’s mountain of fa’alavelave.

“It’s Christmas and we have church activities that we are preparing for, which also require money,” he said.

Tile said he has submitted several applications.

He said the cost of living is very expensive and in order to get things done money is needed to make it happen.

“Money is everything, there are some things that are expensive and also some which are affordable which is why I am grateful for the land that we have.”

None of his parents  are  formally employed but they rely on their plantation for their daily sustenance.

“We have a stall in town, where my parents go to daily to sell what we have got from the plantation such as taro, banana and cocoa. It is true that we earn money from this but it is not enough.”

He said that there is a major competition amongst different farmers.

“There are some days when we earn good money and some days when it will be very slow due to many other farmers selling their crops at the market,” Tile added.

There are four people that work within his family.

His other two siblings work here in Samoa while two brothers are working overseas.
