SYDNEY — Wallabies and New South Wales Waratahs prop Benn Robinson has been forced to call an end to his 72-test career because of a serious eye injury.

The 31-year-old Robinson underwent surgery after being accidentally poked in his right eye during a Super Rugby match seven weeks ago.

Robinson announced his retirement Tuesday, saying doctors had told him the injury was more serious than first thought. He will retire as the most-capped player in Waratahs history with 148 Super Rugby appearances: among Australians only Wallabies captain Stephen Moore has played more Super Rugby matches.

Robinson made his debut debut for the Waratahs in 2006 and his test debut against South Africa the same year. He played his last test in 2014, missing Australia's run to the 2015 World Cup final.
