Mothers should know their roles

Mothers keep families together. This is one of their many roles.

Maria Tusipepa from the Village of Lotofaga is a happy mother who works hard for the betterment of her family.

She shares with the Village Voice her views about the roles of mothers in Samoa. The 34-year-old believes the roles are ever changing, depending on where they are needed.

“My normal chores are just like many other mothers, I wake up and get the children ready for school. I make their lunch and then my husband and I prepare to take care of the rest of the day.”

Maria and her husband are looking after her aunt’s land at Vaoala.

“That is also where we earn money. We make sure the children are off school before we go to work.”

She went on to say that a mother’s role is not easy.

“A mother’s duty is to help keep families together and to provide for them. It’s an everyday routine to worry about where to get bread for the next day.”

Maria says that a mother must always be ready to serve.

“You have to become a woman that serves the people that matter to you well,” she said.

“It’s not easy but this is what we are called to do.”

Many of these skills come naturally.

“If you are raised in a good family, you will know what a mother does when you grow up. We don’t need a degree to be the backbone of the family.”
