Stop this madness

Dear Editor,

Thank you so much, Ombudsman Maiava Iulai Toma.

What a disgraceful misuse and abuse of power that has happened. That’s what the government gets when they change the Public Service Commission Constitution just so they could employ a US-based person we now have as a Police Commissioner!

In the P.S.C Constitution, it used to state that to be considered for the post of Police Commissioner, you had to have worked for the Samoan Police Force for 10 years or more.

As this Commissioner has never worked in the Samoan police force before, they had to change the constitution so they could employ him.

In fact, I believe a senior P.S.C commissioner/adviser resigned over the incident because they didn’t agree with the Constitutional change.

What a bad move for Samoa!

All this Commissioner has brought to the position is the indiscriminant and often public sacking of really good police officers who know Samoan protocol and how to work with the people and who have served the Samoan Police Force longer than he has, while trying to bring weapons into the force to use on a citizenry that are raised on respectfulness and solving situations peacefully through dialogue.

While we are trying to battle the incidence of domestic violence in our homes, this Commissioner is trying to introduce violence into our public arenas! Somebody own up to this mistake and stop the madness before innocent people get hurt.
