The issue of poverty

Dear Editor,

Re: A four-year-old street vendor

Talofa e! This is not a good start to life is it?

Only 4 years old and should be in school but instead forced to help provide for the family.

Where are all the charities that were having seminar after seminar to address this problem? Where are the churches and ministers who should be giving back to the community?

And where is the government that is supposed to care for its citizens?

No employment opportunities, extremely low wages added to the astronomical cost of everyday living no wonder poverty is on the rise and children are sent out by their families to sell stuff.

The government suck holes will come barking and snarling that there is no poverty in Samoa and that these families are lazy, they should work the land or why is the Samoa Observer posting up these embarrassing stories.

Hahaha typical response from the privileged side of the spectrum. Please no one is forcing anyone to help but these stories highlight that the issue of poverty is real in paradise and there are a lot of kindhearted souls who want to help.

If you’re not going to help and ain’t got nothing nice or sympathetic to say, then just be quiet.
