Cricket tournament kicks off

Three Catholics schools that competed in Wednesday's U12 tournament are also vying for the boys and girls U15s title in the three-day cricket tournament

Samoa Cricket Association representative and tournament coordinator, Kalala Tanuvasa, told the  Samoa Observer that the event has teams from the same schools that competed in Wednesday's U-12 tournament.

They include St. Theresa Primary School, Marist Brothers School, and St. Josephs Leauva’a Primary School.

“Today’s matches are a lot harder than the one yesterday because the children are a bit older and play at a much faster pace than the U12 division,” she said.

“For today and tomorrow, pool matches are to be played to see who will get through to the playoff matches and then we’ll have the final on Friday for both boys and girls divisions.

“We here at Samoa Cricket association would like to relay our sincere thanks and appreciation for the participation of all the schools here today, especially the teachers and parents for supporting the development of cricket from the grassroots level."

St. Josephs Leauva’a Primary School teacher and head coach of their cricket team told the Samoa Observer that her team is not really focused on playing to win, but they are relishing the opportunity to have fun and interact with the other students from other schools.

“During classes some students excel academically, but those who don’t are really good in sports and physical activities. This is one advantage and an opportunity they can pursue as a career path in the future,” she stated.

Coach and teacher of the U12 Boys team, Mr. Setefano Tavoi is however not participating, but just to have fun and take part.

“We are here for just one purpose and one purpose only, and that is to secure the title for the U15 age group as well.”

“As I’ve said before during the U12 tournament on Monday, we have been training and working hard on our preparations since the start of the school year.

No matter how hot the sun was during practice we still trained because knew that without pain and sacrifice we will gain nothing.”

The results of the first day of the three-day tournament are as follows:
