Saint Mary’s Primary School celebrated English Day on Thursday with the activities revolving around the theme “we want to live in a free world.”

For the students their English Day celebration centred on being free from the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, poverty and family violence.

It also saw the students learn about the history of English, how to understand and speak it and generate new ideas about the language. The teachers organised various activities for the students to perform as part of the celebrations.

Saint Mary’s Dean of Studies, Malianive Pu’a, told the Samoa Observer that English Day is the most important event of the year due to its link to the students’ skills and knowledge.

“The purpose of English Day is to acknowledge the skills and knowledge of students who are enrolling this year,” she said.

The students also shared their opinions and concerns on the theme of the celebrations and what it meant for each one of them as individuals.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Samoa and the world as well as family violence was a key part of the discussions according to Ms Pu’a.

“As we all know, in our world today there are many things going on, for example the COVID-19 so every person in the world feels very hopeless and concerned about this bad disease.

“Also family problems of abusing both mothers and children.”

The Saint Mary’s hall was packed to capacity with staff, students and parents supporting and cheering for their children performing on the stage.

The student-led entertainment included poems, drama and speeches in English during English Day.

A Saint Mary’s Primary School student told the crowd during her speech that they all wish for the pandemic to come to an end so the world could be normal again as well as all forms of violence ceasing.

Some students performed various dramas based on Disney characters such as princesses and fairies with the crowd cheering them on.
