The Police are investigating the death of a man in Salelologa, Savaii after allegedly drowning at sea while fishing, the Deputy Police Commissioner, Auapaau Logoitino Filipo confirmed.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer on Saturday, Auapaau said the man’s body was recovered from the sea by two others he went fishing with early Friday morning.

“There was an incident early morning yesterday in Savaii that claimed the life of a man in Salelologa while fishing,” he said.

“His body has been recovered.

“There were three of them who went fishing early Friday morning but it resulted in the death of that man, reportedly from drowning and so the other two brought his body back to shore.

“The Police are continuing their investigations on the matter.”

The man who is believed to be about 54-years-old is at the Tuasivi hospital morgue.

Auapaau could not immediately confirm which village of Salelologa the deceased hailed from but is believed to have married into the village.

The incident follows two other cases of fishing expeditions gone wrong in the span of three weeks.

Auapaau said the Police investigation on both cases remains to be open to the public for any new leads on the whereabouts of the two bodies.

“So the investigations on both those cases are continuing,” he said on Saturday.

Three weeks ago on a Saturday, a teenage boy was lost at sea in Saletele, Fagaloa while fishing with his brother. His remains have still not been found.

Fagaloa is located on the northeastern coast of Upolu island.

A few days later, a man from Sagone village also went missing while out at sea fishing with other two men from the village. The search for the man’s body has also been unsuccessful up to this day.

Family members of Mr. Fa'alogo and his friends have been posting on Facebook asking people to remember their uncle, brother and friend in their prayers.

The deceased’s family have conducted a service near the sea as a tribute to their beloved as they pray for his body’s return to be properly laid to rest.

Sagone village is on the south coast of Savai'i and is in the traditional district of Salega No.2.
