There needs to be more awareness in Samoa on the benefits of bicycles and how its use can contribute to good health while being a cheap mode of transport.

That is the view of the Outdoor Samoa Limited Manager, Aukusitino Konesetino, when discussing the uniqueness, versatility and longevity of the bicycle as countries around the world marked World Bicycle Day on June 3.

The theme of the commemoration for this year is: “Uniqueness, versatility, and longevity of the bicycle as a simple, sustainable, economical and reliable mode of transportation.”

Mr Konesetino, whose company leases bicycles, told the Samoa Observer that bicycles are known for being simple, inexpensive and dependable and are also known for being environmentally friendly.

“Cycling has tremendous health benefits for all age groups and it's a better mode of transport – affordable, environment-friendly and healthy,” he said in an interview.

“Cycling leads to a healthier life, leads to increased heart fitness, muscle strength and flexibility. It improves joint mobility and helps decrease stress levels.

"Cycling also saves money: bikes are free to ride and a stress-free mode of travel.

“The bicycle is a symbol of environmentally friendly transportation that also saves money on gas.”

The last order that the company made for new bicycles was in 2019 to expand their fleet according to Mr Konesetino.

“In 2019 our last order of more than 10 new bicycles arrived and added to our total of 80 new and 20 old bikes we had so in total we have more than a hundred bicycles, both standard and electric bikes."

Mr Konesetino said their last tour was during this year’s Easter weekend when more than 20 expatriates currently resident in Samoa hired the bikes to tour around the island.

He said the majority of their guests and customers since the Covid-19 pandemic struck were expats who have business and live in Samoa.

Giving a breakdown of the fees that his company charges, Mr. Konesetino said the rental fees are affordable with standard bikes rented out for $85 a day and e-bikes (electric) $140 a day.

Should you wish to hire a bicycle for a week, the standard bike is $350 for 5 days with two days free, and the e-bicycle $680 with two days free.

According to NDTV.Com, the United Nations General Assembly in New York commemorated the first World Bicycle Day on Sunday, June 3, 2018.

It was created to honour the numerous sorts of bicyclists who exist around the world. The bicycle and how it belongs to and benefits all of humanity was also commemorated on the day.
