Primary schools around Vaimauga kicked off their U-12 cricket competitions on Tuesday at the Garden Oval, Tuanaimato.

Six schools participated: Samoa Primary school, Laulii Primary school, Vailele Primary school, Tanugamanono Primary school, Fagalii Primary school, and Moataa Primary school.

Despite the morning rain, the students were still eager to play on - something which almost never happens on a cricket field in bad weather.

The games will continue for the whole week. Finals will be on Thursday.

The Samoa International Cricket Association (S.I.C.A) is also hosting clinics in rural areas. Other Primary schools in the Anoamaa region and Anoamaa themselves will have their competition on Friday, depending on weather conditions.

A S.I.C.A official said they were continuing to develop and maintain cricket at the grassroots level.

A heavy downpour on Tuesday caused the Cricket Association to meet with the coaches to discuss whether to continue play. They agreed to a shortened version of the planned competition.

They kicked off with the U-12 competition on Tuesday and will continue on with the U-15s on Wednesday and Thursday. They will continue onto the Anoamaa district on Friday.

"This is a great way to get the students away from [their books and pens] and [to] do something else. We all know that not all of them can be good in education some are good in sports," said Mr. Tapuanuu Sili, a teacher for one of the participating schools.

Sili also says that these competitions help in motivating students to come to school every day.
