Protecting our young girls

You’ve got to do whatever it takes to protect those you love, especially girls.

Aiga Ese’ese is a father of five children from the village of Nu’u Fou.

He spoke about the real threat to Samoa right now in terms of cases of rape against young girls.

Speaking with the Village Voice team yesterday, Mr. Ese’ese said such cases worried him very much.

“There is so much happening within Samoa lately, and not a day goes by that I don’t hear and watch news about young girls getting raped.

“I have young daughters and I have told my wife not to send them to the shop or anywhere anymore both day and night time because I don’t want anything bad to happen to them.”

Mr. Ese’ese shared how he felt about the place they were staying in right now.

“People in this place are from here and there and it is unsafe sending my daughters outside of the house.

“We have been living here in Nu’u Fou for eight years now and still I don’t trust my daughters going to the shop by themselves, so if we ever need anything from the shop I’ll just go.”

Mr. Ese’ese is currently working at the Ah-Liki company and he is the sole provider for his family.

He believes the issue with young girls should raise awareness among parents.

“To me I think parents should work together to protect their children all the time especially the girls.

“It goes back to basic Samoan nurturing through family prayers every evening, as well as teaching the girls how to dress up in the house as well as outside and parents have to be there all the time with them.”

Mr. Ese’ese says that if we really love our children, then we have to do whatever it takes to protect them.

“In order to protect our loved ones, we have to do whatever it takes to protect them and work together in communities and villages to minimise this serious threat to Samoa and our young girls.”
