Dana Siatuu needs a job.

She is desperate to help support her two daughters and her partner’s family who she normally visits at Falefa village.

The 45-year-old says the rundown house that her partner lives in needs a lot of work. They are both unemployed.

For five years, they still don’t have power and water supply. According to Ms. Siatuu, there are a lot of family members who live with them in the small shack.

“They really need help. It is him and the siblings who live here. The mother usually comes here and that is why he is keen on fixing this house.”

“He has been trying really hard to fix everything. There are like nine of them altogether who come here often. He is the second to the youngest.”

“Basically he looks after his sister’s and brother’s children,” she said.

The Village Voice team found Dana washing her dishes at the village waterfall. She was using a coconut husk to wash their buckets of dishes.

She says they really need help.

“When the cyclone came they stayed here. They really have strong faith in the house that they live in.”

“There are so many things which this house needs, but it all depends on how much money that could be earned.”

“They have to walk all the way on the other end to use the toilet that is up the hill.”

She explained: “It only took him a year to build the house by himself and he has no job at the moment. He just returned from Australia.”

“Life is really hard here and that is what I have noticed and to me this house is not safe. He has been living here for so long.”

“When there’s torrential rainfall, it causes the waterfall to burst and luckily it just comes on the road, but it does not reach the house.”

They have no proper kitchen as well.

Ms. Siatuu adds their food is usually cooked under their rundown house with the small space that they have.
