The Samoa Meteorology Division has issued a heavy rain advisory for all of Samoa as it continues to monitor a low pressure system west of Fiji that continues to affect the islands.

The Meteorology Division issued a weather update 5pm Sunday (local time) that pointed to a convergence zone that is linked to a low pressure system located west of Fiji which is forecast to affect the islands within the next 24 hours.

The office has forecast numerous showers with heavy falls which could cause flooding.

The Meteorology Division is also forecasting gusty winds as well as elevated wind waves and swells for marine waters.

Consequently, the need for a heavy rain advisory to be declared for the whole of Samoa, which the Meteorology Division warned could be upgraded to a warning on Monday.

“The heavy rain advisory is likely to upgrade into a warning by [Monday] tomorrow evening as well as the flood advisory.”

The potential impacts from these extreme weather could include poor visibility in heavy rain, gusty winds, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges, and pooling near roadsides and waterways.

The caution from the Meteorology Division comes on the back of flash flooding on 15 December 2020 followed by a second one three weeks ago.

In case of any flooding, the Ministry of Health (M.O.H.)  has advised members of the public to gather enough emergency supplies such as non-perishable items as well as medication in case floods worsen.

Additionally, caretakers need to ensure elderly and people living with a disability are looked after and have a good supply of medication.

While mothers continue breastfeeding babies and young children it’s safer than preparing infant formula and healthier.

In addition, to ensure important documents such as passports, immunization records are safe and sealed in a plastic bag or container.

“Do not allow children to swim or play in flood water this is to avoid injury, waterborne diseases and drowning.

“All family members need to wear dry-warm clothes to avoid illness. Pack an emergency bag with all basic needs in case you need to evacuate."
