An enthusiastic group of Year 7 students from Vaiala Beach School visited the Samoa Observer’s headquarters at Vaitele yesterday.

With pens and paper ready in hand, the kids were ready to learn.

The group was accompanied by their teacher, Scott Saunders and some parents.

Mr. Saunders said this is an annual trip for students.

“We’ve been looking at newspapers and how to write a formal report,” he said.

“What we got the students to do was make their own front page with the Vaiala Beach Newspaper.

They’ve written some articles and interviewed new staff members, new students to the school and we put in our own Newspaper.

They’ve been doing for the last three-four weeks and this is the end of the work.”

At Vaitele, the students were given a glimpse of life working in a daily newspaper.

Samoa Observer’s Coordinator of  Newspaper In Education,  Marj Moore gave the run down of the daily happenings of an on-the-go place like the Samoa Observer.

The students were also treated to a welcome appearance by Samoa Observer’s Editor, Mata’afa Keni Lesa as well as the Online Manager, Jarrett Malifa.

They were given a tour of the facilities from the newsroom to the printing station.  They also got a holistic idea of the different cogs in the machine that help put together the daily paper.

From reporters, to layout team to the digital team, the Year 7 boys and girls had the opportunity to quench their curiosity and had heaps of questions prepared to ask.

Towards the end of their visit, the children had the opportunity to meet Samoa Observer’s Editor-in-Chief, Gatoaitele Savea Sano Malifa.

And to round off their experience, they will have this photo from the newspaper to keep for a lifetime.
