The Lakapi Samoa have officially welcomed Mase Mahonri Schwalger as the Assistant Coach for the Manu Samoa XV.

He will be working alongside his former teammate Vaovasamanaia Seilala Mapuilesua.

"As we await the birth of the Christmas baby, we would like to use this opportunity to make known our plans for next year,” said Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun, the High-Performance Unit General Manager said.

Seumanu said that Mase and Vaovasamanaia had been appointed by the team’s head Coach, Vaovasamanaia, and his appointment had been passed by the committee.

"Now the two will work together in preparing our Manu Samoa team,” Seumanu said.

“Mase's work needs no introduction, he is a former Manu Samoa player; they both played together. Mase was the captain while Mapusua was the vice-captain, but now Mapusua is the coach and he is the assistant.

“We offer our biggest congratulations and welcome Mase on board, his service as a coach is also being recognised, Mase was appointed as the Assistant while he was also the assistant for our Manuma squad and also Aana Chiefs.”

Mase expressed his gratitude towards Mapusua and also the Lakapi Samoa for acknowledging his past work and said he had been humbled.

"There is not much to say other than I am grateful for the opportunity given to me so that I can help in developing our team. I would like to thank the committee and the President for this golden opportunity," Mase said.

Coach Vaovasa is happy to have Mase on board with him because he believes they make the perfect duo.

"I look forward to working with Mase and helping out with Manu Samoa in the future. We have a big year next year, our first game is in July against the rugby qualifier Tonga, so that's our focus,” he said.

“Hopefully, in the new year, we will be able to reveal our technical assistance for the Manu Samoa. As of now, we are focusing on qualifying for the World Cup.”

Vaovasa plans to return to New Zealand for the holidays and return to Samoa by the end of January next year.
