Ombudsman position advertised

The Government has invited interested parties to apply for the top job at the Ombudsman’s Office and they have a week left to apply.

The incumbent Ombudsman is Maiava Iulai Toma, one of the longest serving public servants in Samoa.

Maiava has been away for most of the year undergoing medical attention in New Zealand.

Acting in Maiava role is the Acting Ombudsman, Deputy Ombudsman, Maualaivao Pepe Seiuli.

The Ombudsman position has been on the Public Service Commission’s special advertisement board since early November.

The position is on a contractual basis and levelled with Chief Executive Officer Grade C salary, starting from $119,033 to $123,361 per year.

Maiava's previous positions include being Secretary to the Samoan Government, C.E.O. Department of Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and Cabinet, Commissioner for Samoa to the South Pacific Commission in Noumea, Samoa’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador to the USA and High Commission to Canada.

In 1994, Maiava took up the position of Ombudsman.

The Office of the Ombudsman, which is also the nation’s National Human Rights Institution provides advice to the general public on matters relating to good governance and investigates potential maladministration in Government agencies.

The establishment also carries out research and conducts activities in the promotion and protection of human rights in Samoa as well as investigations concerning the abuse of power in enforcement agencies.
