Police investigate collision at sea

The Police are investigating a fishing boat collision after a local fishing alia filed a criminal complaint against a foreign fishing vessel involved.

The collision occurred during the early hours of Friday 16 October 2020 off the coast of Falefa, Police Commissioner Fuiavailiili Egon Keil confirmed on Wednesday.

In an email, he said no one was injured on either vessel.

But the owner of the local alia, whom he did not reveal, has filed a criminal complaint against the foreign vessel and an investigation is now ongoing.

Fuiavailiili did not confirm where the foreign vessel is from.

The Commissioner also said the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure is the official entity responsible for investigating marine collisions and will be conducting its own inquiries.

Questions sent to the Ministry Chief Executive Officer, Magele Hoe Viali, were not responded to by press time.

It is not known the extent to which the two crews interacted with each other, and whether any COVID-19 prevention measures were taken in response.

Questions to the National Emergency Operations Centre (N.E.O.C.) and the Ministry of Health were not responded to by press time.
