Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi says all nurses need to undergo proper training to ensure they provide a better service, especially to children.

Speaking during his weekly media conference, he said the nurses’ administering of the vaccine – which allegedly led to the deaths of two babies in Savai’i – has been blamed in the preliminary results from the postmortem.

He echoed the concerns of the Minister of Health, Tuitama Dr. Leao Tuitama, in a recent interview with the media, where preliminary results from the postmortem of the two one-year-old infants point to alleged negligence.

“We are still waiting for the final results from overseas but those were the findings that the Ministry of Police had based their charges upon. This means the vaccination is okay but it is probably the mixing of the vaccination that’s the problem. That’s what it seems like."

“Another thing is that there needs to be a doctor to oversee the nurses that are on duty at the time. But that what how the police were able to charge the two nurses it was based on that preliminary reports. But the most important thing about this is that the nurses needs to have proper trainings, whether it is a senior nurse or not they need to have trainings where all of them are there,” he said.

Tuilaepa said all nurses should attend the same kind of training, to ensure there are no gaps in the knowledge and skills that are taught to them.

“This thing about the Senior nurses having trainings and then they come and train the other nurses that’s not how it should be all of them need to attend the same training so that they would know the importance of their work. That way their service will improve to avoid this from happening again,” he added.
