Remarks by Chinese Ambassador Wang Xuefeng

I am also very impressed by the progress that all of you have made through the training. First of all, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy, I would like to take this opportunity to express my warm congratulations to all the participants for your successful training of this program.

Two years ago, on my first visit to Savaii, I and my colleagues donated some sewing machines on behalf of Chinese Embassy to the Women’s Council of Safotu village. Since then, we have thought about providing training in addition to the donation of sewing machines.

Last year, with the Sponsor of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, with the close collaboration of the Chinese Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development of Samoa, and Hunan International Business Vocational College, the first Training Course on Creative Handicrafts and Sewing skills for Samoa was successfully held for 80 women from four villages in Samoa. In the past two years, many women have learned the sewing skills which enabled them either to find a new way of earning money for their families or to improve their life through sewing clothes for all family members with their own hands.

Furthermore, this program has become so popular that more and more people are inquiring about this program and hope to participate in the program in the future. Therefore I also want to express our sincere thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development of Samoa as well as the Women’s Councils of the participating villages for all the cooperative efforts which make this program so successful.

In particular, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the teachers from Hunan International Business Vocational College. They have been working very hard together with all the participants of this program during the past several weeks, teaching the women one on one all the practical skills in operating pedal sewing machines, tailoring and sewing clothes for men, women and children. All their efforts have paid off as we see today the beautiful garments that the participants have made with their own hands.

All beautiful things will come to an end. Today when we gather here for the closing ceremony of this program, I can truly feel the warm friendship that has been forged between Samoan participants and Chinese teachers during the training process in the past three weeks.

I was told about many touching moments in the course of training. Some villagers always gave helping hands in carrying and assembling sewing machines; some villagers prepared fresh fruits for Chinese teachers everyday.

Our Chinese teacher worked very hard in order to help the villagers learn the skills because    some of the villagers had never touched a sewing machine before or had no idea how to sew clothes by themselves.

The Chinese teachers were always the first ones to come and the last ones to leave the classroom everyday and spent all their time in the classrooms teaching the villagers sewing skills.

They answered questions and gave demonstrations repeatedly with great patience. They helped fix the sewing machines and donated fabrics to villagers. Let us give another round of applause to all the wonderful participants and Chinese teachers for what you have achieved in the past three weeks which have been so rewarding and memorable.

The Chinese teachers will leave Samoa tomorrow, but the beautiful memories about this program will remain in the hearts of all the people who are involved and the friendship between Chinese and Samoan people will last forever.

Thank you!
