The only team from Savai’i to register in the 2020 Teuila Tag Competition is ready to represent the big island.

The Fa'ala Broncos was the first and only team from the big island to register for the sporting event this Saturday at the St Joseph’s College field in Alafua.

The team captain, Molani I'aulualo, told the Samoa Observer in an interview that they cannot wait for the tournament to kick off and all teams are eyeing the trophy.

"Yes, we are the only team from Savaii. For the upcoming tournament, I know all the teams are here to win, there is no team who is doing this just for fun. And Fa'ala Broncos just can't wait for the tournament to start on Saturday,” he said.

“As the only team and our first time in this tournament, we want a better outcome and that is what we're aiming for. It is not only for us, our village, but for the whole Savai’i island who are supporting us from the big island.”

The team is made up of untitled men and students from the village of Faala with most of them lacking gametime experience in tag competitions, except for I'aulualo who previously played for the Shakers tag team.

"I am the only one who has played tag before, but all of our teams are new to the game. However, thanks to the President and his board for hosting clinics in Savai’i, which helped a lot in developing our players and getting them to know more about tag before they actually play it this Saturday," he added.

Despite the team’s limited gametime experience, I'aulualo remains confident about their chances this Saturday.

"With our preparations, I am absolutely sure that they are 100 per cent ready for this, and for them they just can't wait for Saturday to come so that they can play.

“This is a good chance for my boys to expose themselves in other sports different from the sports they usually play.

“With the tag's introduction to Faala, I have seen how much our youth and men loved the sport, since it's not really that popular in Savai’i.”

I'aulualo hopes that the tournament this Saturday will lead to the code experiencing growth, which he said should translate to more teams in Savai’i.

"Whatever is good for Upolu, it's also good for Savaii"," he said smiling.

The Fa'ala Broncos have their work cut out for them and will face Salamumu, Vaiala and the Panthers in the Men's Division Pool A. With 16 teams vying for the title in the Men's Division only one can win.
