Skeleton mysteries remain unresolved
The unresolved mystery of three different human skeletons discovered between 2017 and 2018 are among a backlog of cases awaiting investigation by the Coronial Court.
Residents from Vailele discovered unidentified human skull and bones near the Maugafiafia waterfall in October 2017.
A year later, two other skeletons were found near the Saanapu beach.
Police reports at the time suspected the skeletons found together were those of an adult male and an adult female.
There were no records of missing persons at the time on that part of the island, the Police found.
In the Coroner’s Court presided by Judge Alalatoa Rosella Viane-Papalii last week, the cases of the unknown human remains were on the list for forthcoming inquiries.
The matter was not dealt with on the day but will remain on the Coroner’s inquest list until it is resolved.
There were eight other inquests on the Coronial list last week awaiting an investigation and ruling on the cause of death.
Judge Alalatoa had previously expressed concerns over the Attorney General’s Office handling of close to 10 inquests two weeks ago resulting in a delay to presiding over cases.
The Attorney-General’s Office had informed the Coroner that they were unable to proceed due to not having the required files for the inquests.
