Teacher accused of sexual act on student granted bail

A teacher from a college in Upolu who has been accused of sexual offending against a student has been released on bail, after he was charged and remanded in custody earlier this month.

Paulo Ieremia is facing three sex-related charges including rape in relation to a female student from the school.

Represented by lawyer Unasa Iuni Sapolu, the accused was released on bail this week.

Chief Justice, His Honour Satiu Simativa Perese granted bail for Ieremia on the condition that he reports to the police station on a weekly basis.

Unasa sought an adjournment from the court in order to obtain instructions from her client on the charges.

The matter has been adjourned to 7 September.

Co-defendant and vice-principal of the same college, Petelo Samaila, is also facing indecent assault charges against the same student.

He was scheduled to appear in the District Court this week but his name was not on the criminal list.

Both men were penalised by the village where the incident occurred and were ordered to pay $2000 tala.
