Alleged burglar caught, charged

A man who was caught on a security camera crawling on the floor of a popular restaurant in town has been charged by the Police.

That suspect allegedly broke into the Amani Restaurant the previous weekend, but was captured on CCTV with the eatery’s staff posting the image on social media to appeal for public assistance to identify the man.

The man has been identified as Epati Matulino Toeaina who was captured by the Police in Savai’i. 

A photo of Epati surfaced online after it was uploaded to Facebook by Yvonnedrelina Epati, who made an appeal in Samoan urging the public to assist in the identification and location of a male aged in his 20-30s.

“Please share this. The Police are looking for this wickedness thief who stole money and properties from the Amani Restaurant yesterday [Sunday],” Epati posted. “Please contact Amani Restaurant or give us a call.”

The picture upon its uploading to Facebook went viral. 

The Ministry of Justice and Courts Administration Assistant Chief Executive Officer, Ve'atauia Fa'atasi, confirmed that the suspect has been charged.

“He is charged with two counts of burglary for allegedly breaking into the Apia Electrical Warehouse and the residence of Henry Hunkin,” said the A.C.E.O.

The accused is remanded into custody and IS scheduled to appear on 17 August, 2020 before the Supreme Court.
