The Laumei Outrigger Club hosted their Alova'a Regatta at the weekend, which saw more than 50 paddlers compete in the fun regatta to bring back the water sport.

The regatta was the first since the measles epidemic and state of emergency lockdown brought all sporting activity to a standstill.

In a press release that was distributed by the club, the organisers of the event said participants were looking forward to the event last weekend.

"Many paddlers were eager to be competing on the Outrigger Canoe or Va’a against fellow member clubs during the fun regatta," the club stated in a press release.

There were four clubs including the hosting club that competed in the 3 kilometers Dash and the 250 Sprint .

"Aliyah Outrigger Canoe Club, Nafanua Outrigger Canoe Club, Pualele Outrigger Canoe Club joined with hosts Laumei Outrigger Canoe Club to compete in the 3km Dash and 250m Sprint," the press release stated.

The fun regatta emphasised on encouraging those in the socials category, who are novice paddlers who just joined the paddling community but have yet to compete in an actual regatta.

The categories include Open Men, Open Women, Social Mix and Open Mix with no club being dominant during the fun regatta with each club all winning a lot of fun prizes.

The sponsors for the Laumei Fun Regatta included HJ Keil, Laumei Rentals, Zac's Hirage, MAD Pacific, Apia Yacht Club and various prizes sponsored by Laumei Outrigger Canoe Club members.

The Laumei Fun Regatta organisers said they were grateful to each club for making the fun regatta such an enjoyable event and have invited interested social paddlers to join in so the water sport can continue to grow.
