The registration of voters for the Gagaifomauga No.3 by-election is underway with the date for polling yet to be confirmed.

This was confirmed by the Electoral Commissioner, Faimalotumua Mathew Lemisio.

“We’ll confirm the dates once the roll is temporarily closed," he said.

"But we’re looking at the last week of August as the possible timeframe for polling.”

Meanwhile, registration of voters who are eligible to vote in the upcoming by-election has commenced in Savai’i.

The Office of the Electoral Commission travelled to the big island on Tuesday and started registrations on Wednesday.

The Rolls for Gagaifomauga No.3 by-election will be closed on Friday 31st of July, 2020.

“We issued a notice yesterday (Tuesday) confirming that the Rolls for the Gagaifomauga No. 3 by-election closes on Friday 31st July 2020,” said Faimalomatumua.

When questioned about how a by-election was triggered, as the outgoing Member of Parliament for Gagaifomauga No.3 claims that he did not tender in an official resignation letter to the speaker that could declare the seat vacant, Faimalotumua replied saying:

“Our Office’s Role in this process is triggered once we are issued with the warrant from the Honourable Speaker to proceed with a by election to return a Member for a vacant Seat in Parliament.

“We received that Warrant last Friday and under the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2019, we are obligated to proceed with the by-election process.”
