Small craft advisory remains in effect

The public has been warned to take precaution as a small craft advisory remains in effect for all coastal to open waters while a wind advisory has been issued for the eastern to southern districts and the highlands.

The Samoa Meteorology Division sent out the caution as part of a “severe weather information” that was issued on Tuesday 5am, and attributed the weather advisories to what it described as an intensified high-pressure system to the northeast of New Zealand.

The high-pressure system continues to drift eastward to direct fresh and strong Southeast winds, which can increase up to 40-45 kph, mostly for the eastern to southern districts as well as highlands.

These winds also maintain wave and swell activity of 2.5 to 3 meters in Samoa’s coastal to open waters. Potential impacts would include fresh southeasterly winds at times, strong and pull out currents as well as rough seas and high surf.

According to the Division, the high-pressure system centered northeast of New Zealand is predicted to be the main weather future to dominate over the islands for the next few days, as it continues to migrate eastward providing fresh to strong southeast winds and tradewind showers across the island chain.

An active convergence zone is expected to descend over Samoa from the north by Wednesday and will bring rain until Thursday. This convergence zone will weaken by late Thursday and will push northward as the high-pressure system develops and builds north-westward from the southeast.

The Samoa Meteorology Division is part of the Government’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
