Minister to resurrect Assistant Police Commissioner role
The Minister of Police and Corrections, Tialavea Tionisio Hunt, called for the resurrection of the role of Assistant Police Commissioner in the force.
The call from the Minister, made in Parliament, comes three years after the position was dissolved.
“There are twenty three divisions within the Police force," Tialavea said.
"Twelve divisions are overseen by Police Superintendents, yet the duties carried out are the job description slated for A.C.E.O. positions.
“So it only makes sense to reinstate these positions."
According to the Police annual report for financial year 2017-2018, four Assistant Commissioners of Police resigned from their post.
One Assistant Commissioner was suspended and later resigned.
At that time, Cabinet went ahead with its restructure of the Ministry of Police executive body.
They introduced the role of Deputy Police Commissioner, and removed the Assistant Commissioners.
In Parliament the Minister compared the Ministry of Police organisational chart to other ministries.
“I am not sure why this has happened but this Ministry is just as important as other Ministries to reinstate A.C.E.O. positions that way, it is a three year contract and they are paid in accordance with the duties performed.”
According to Tialavea, they have submitted a request to the Salary Tribunal to revamp the salaries for the Ministry of Police and Corrections.
