The completion of the three-year Habitat Build Project Samoa was celebrated at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel yesterday.

Adventist Development Relief Agency (A.D.R.A.) in Samoa, Habitat for Humanity from New Zealand and Samoa Housing Corporation (S.H.C.) spearheaded this project that focused on providing shelter for Samoans who had sought housing assistance.

Habitat for Humanity in New Zealand Chief Operations Officer, Alan Thorp, said A.D.R.A., S.H.C. and Habitat for Humanity each play a critical role in the project.

“I’m very thankful to be here, being a part of a Christian organisation. We believe that everyone around the world has a basic human right to housing because it builds strength, stability and self-reliance,” Mr. Thorp said.

A.D.R.A. Country Director, Su’a Julia Wallwork, said the goal was to build 265 homes, but thanks to Habitat for Humanity, they managed to build 286 shelters.

However requests from people reached 1000.

Su’a said Tropical Cyclone Evan in 2012 left a lot of people homeless and they built 204 emergency shelters to cater for these people.

Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Papali’itele Niko Lee was thankful for the successful completion of the project.

“We honour both Habitat for Humanity and A.D.R.A. for their strong Christian principles that have joined forces to build lives and to build hope in times of sorrow and distress, working in close association with the Government of Samoa, through the Samoa Housing Corporation.

“We leave everything in God’s hands so we must depend on his continuous blessings for the success of future plans,” Papaliitele said.
