Mother's Day had extra meaning for Vaopule Filifiliga, of Siumu, her family and friends.

The elderly mother celebrated her 83rd birthday. But it's nothing new. Every Mother’s Day is always a double celebration for her family and the church.

“All my life, I have always been felt blessed on this day. Since I was a little girl to becoming a mother, this is a day I look forward to.

“I am grateful, I am honoured to be a mother and reaching another Mother’s Day at such an old age is such a blessing.”

Asked what she had wished for her birthday this year, she said it’s the ability to understand, hear, see and be with her children.

She said age and losing some of the her senses are her greatest fear.

“I just wish to remain with my children and grandchildren and witness them living a peaceful life for a long period of time,” she added.

As one of the oldest people in the Pentecost Church in Siumu, she said she is one of the luckiest too.

On a daily basis, Mrs. Filifiliga loves to do chores by herself, exercise, pray and send her children to school.

Mrs. Filifiliga’s advice for all mothers of Samoa is to never give up easily.

“We are the (pae ma le auli) peacemakers in our families,”  she said.

“Mother’s Day should be a day to remind us of our duties in our families especially to our children. May you all have a wonderful Mother’s Day this year and God bless.”

The church Minister’s wife, Elisapeta Maposua, said the birthday girl is always a star during their mother's day celebrations.
