Rain forecast after dry March
Samoa is expected to be hit with heavy rain this week as a low pressure system hangs over the country’s north.
The Samoa Meteorology Office warned on Monday that the trough of low pressure is embedded with heavy rain.
“This system is expected to slowly drift southwards over the islands and could provide brief moderate to heavy falls and few thunderstorms,” the warning reads.
“These conditions warrant the issuance of the heavy rain advisory for today.”
Potential effects include heavy downpour at times; poor visibility; and foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges.
Gusty winds at times and pooling near roadsides and waterways are also forecast.
This comes after last month’s rainfall was recorded as “below average”, according to a climate summary report for March.
The month of March had significantly less rainfall activity than recent months.
Next month, a warm group of sea surface temperatures will stretch over the Samoa Islands, forecasters say, bringing warmer than average conditions for May.
