A Police Officer working as part of the Tactical Operation Squad, Silivelio Luifaitaua, has been charged with assault following an off duty incident. He has also been suspended.

The Commissioner of Police, Fuiavaili'ili Egon Keil, confirmed the incident in response to questions from the Samoa Observer.

It is unclear when the Police Officer will appear in the District Court. 

“He has represented Samoa Police Service well in local and international forums, and a strong officer," the Commissioner said.

“But unfortunately he made an error of judgement resulting in his arrest for assault stemming from an off duty incident and with normal practice, has been suspended from duty until his matter is resolved".

Efforts to get comments from the suspended officer were unsuccessful.
