A family in Puipa’a has appealed to the Electric Power Corporation (E.P.C.) to reinstall a street light which was removed from the area around their house during a road construction.

A father-of-two, Malu Ma’a, told the Samoa Observer that his family has had unpleasant experiences since the removal of the street light last year. 

“In our village, we have very strict rules that no youth or anyone is allowed to play music too loud, especially at nights or get drunk in the village,” he said.

“But I’ve observed that the youth are becoming aware of the darkness in front of my house ever since the street light pole was taken down, and were taking advantage of it by getting drunk and playing their music out loud, especially at nights in that spot.”

According to the father, it is impossible to identify the culprits behind the anti-social behaviour with the absence of the street light. 

Four visits to the E.P.C. to raise his concerns have been unsuccessful, according to Mr Ma’a, and the anti-social behaviour has continued unabated.

Mr Ma’a added that due to their inability to identify the misbehaving youth, they are unable to bring the matter to the village council for action to be taken. 

The E.P.C. management has been contacted for comment and did not reply at the time of going to press.
