Poverty is an issue in Samoa.

Ina Soti, 30, of Tuaefu believes it is something that is not talked about often enough.

“We are facing a lot of poverty in Samoa,” he said. “You can see that everywhere.”

The father of three said the reason why people are poor is because they don’t work hard enough.

“If people just sit around and talk about how poor they are, instead of doing some work, then they will always be poor.”

Ina is a taxi driver and is happy with what he makes.

“It’s a good job for me,” he said.

“You know nothing is ever easy but that’s life.”

Getting back to the issue of poverty, Ina also believes so many people are poor because the cost of living is ridiculous expensive.

“We all know what is happening nowadays, the expensive cost of living is increasing, you can hardly afford anything with five tala.

“Everything is expensive, even having a $100 is nothing these days. Yet many people don’t have money.”

Everyday obligations are not helping such as fa’alavelave, he said.

“The question is what is happening to our country? I mean look at those people begging on the street for money? Some of them look very strong and can work…

“The problem is, they are too lazy, relying more on other people but not doing something for themselves.”

Ina also believes the government needs to formulate some policies to help the poor people of Samoa. He believes there should be a benefit initiative to assist these people.
