Between the Lines

Jammed doors at Faleolo Airport

This is a true story.

So apparently a Samoa Airways Flight, OL 732, arrived last week and the auto doors at the Faleolo Airport’s arrival area were jammed.

They could not be opened.

A source told BTL that all the automated doors could not be opened in the entire terminal.

The Samoa Airport Authority officials were then asked if they could redirect passengers through the Oversize baggage door at the end of the arrivals hall.

The immediate answer was a no.

But after a 20 minutes wait, this was eventually done so that all passengers were directed to Immigration through the oversize baggage door.

The doors did not open until about 15 minutes after all the passengers had been redirected and were processed by Immigration.

So what happened?

And what if this was a serious matter concerning life and death?

We are talking about a brand new spanking airport that costs millions and millions of tala.

There has got to be a plan B.

Amidst last week’s chaos, BTL was told that the S.A.A. staff were waiting for a Chinese guy who is the only one with the ‘master key’ to disarm the system and reboot.

Oh dear… what would happen if he went back to China and accidently took the key with him?

First aid kit

Speaking of the new airport, a visitor arrived from New Zealand on an Air NZ flight sometime ago.

She had apparently gone to the bathroom and her finger got jammed in a door, when it unexpectedly shut.

Long story short, there was no First Aid or Medical assistance provided at the Airport so they had to travel all the way to the Main Hospital for treatment.

A passenger who told BTL about it summed it up nicely: “It was a case of international terminal with 'village-type' service.”

But then again, I think in some villages you will find a medical kit!

Fire the coach?

So now that the Manu Samoa team has qualified for the World Cup next year, will the Samoa Rugby Union keep the same coach and the management? Or will they soon fire this coaching staff for a new coach and management?

Only time will tell.

Stay tuned!
