No cyclones, more hard rain forecast

Predictions that a cyclone would land on Samoa’s shores yesterday proved premature - but February’s unrelenting weather appears set to continue.

Tropical Cyclone Vicky, a Category 1 storm, had been forecast to be a moderate chance of reaching Samoa on Friday afternoon before it diverted its course, moving instead towards American Samoa.

“[The cyclone is] located about 133km south southeast of Apia or 69km south southeast of Aleipata [as at 2pm],” the Samoa Meteorology Service said in a statement on Friday evening.

“[Tropical Cyclone] Vicky continues to move east southeast and away from Samoa at a speed of 11 [kilometres an hour]”.

But despite the reprieve from the cyclone, the MET Office forecast more bad weather was on the way for the islands.

A low pressure system has been tracked to the west northwest of the islands, approximately 577 kilometres off shore.

On Friday evening it was forecast to continue drifting towards Samoa.

“This system will again bring heavy rainfall and strong to gusty winds,” the forecasters said.

The Samoa Met Office has advised members of the public to remain alert as the bad weather is expected to continue.

“So we are still enforcing all of our warnings and advisories, since there is still satellite image of another low pressure which could possibly turn into a Tropical Disturbance. It is set to arrive this evening and yes we will experience heavy rainfalls again,” Maccarios Auvae, a Weather Scientific Officer at the Met Office said.

"The weather is unpredictable at this stage, and we can't say for sure whether the low pressure that is currently forming at the northwest of Apia will turn into a tropical disturbance.”

But there is a reprieve in sight.

The Meteorology Service is predicting thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall today for both Upolu and Savai’i. But also a general easing of conditions as the week drags on.

On Sunday and Monday this week Government forecasters are only predicting isolated showers for Upolu and brief showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
