The Avele Class of 1980 has donated $6,000 to the Ministry of Health.

The presentation was made on Tuesday by Salega Member of Parliament, Olo Fiti Vaai, to the Minister of Health, Faimalotoa Kika Stowers, during the Parliament session.

Olo said the donation is intended to assist the nation's recovery process from the measles epidemic that swept Samoa and killed 83 people.

The donation was collected by Avele members from New Zealand, Australia and Samoa.

He also used the opportunity to ask the Minister of Health for an ambulance for district hospitals in Savai'i.

"To the Minister of Education, I noted that there were so many white vans [that were used during the epidemic] and yet there is no ambulance at Fuailalo," Olo said.

"It would be nice to distribute some vans for the hospitals in that area, and then eventually upgrade into an ambulance but at least there is a vehicle to assist.

"So that when another similar situation comes up, there are vehicles ready for use."

Olo made his point further by saying that medical officers currently use their own vehicles to go out to the districts.

The white vans mentioned are the 2019 Pacific Games vehicles that were used and operated by the National Emergency Operation Center during the month long State of Emergency.

They assisted in emergency response teams as well as mobilising teams for the vaccination two-day shut down organised by Government.
