The women’s rugby sevens competition is scheduled to kick off on February 27.

Ta'ala Tui Komiti, who is the Samoa Rugby Union Manager (Development and Competitions), said teams are yet to sign to participate in the competition.

"Teams are yet to sign up for the tournament," he said. "The women sevens competitions is to develop the local talents (women and girls) in our community.”

The objective of the Samoa Rugby Union (S.R.U.) is to align with one of World Rugby's top priorities, namely increasing and improving the women's game.

Ta'ala said their goals should align with that of the Manu Sina 7s team.

"It also aligns with the Manu Sina 7s plan to select the best players on the island in preparations with the Olympics qualifying repechage in June,'' he said.

Last year's tournament attracted eight women's teams competing in the local sevens competition. This year they are looking at registering more teams to compete in order to see and identify local talent.

They are hoping to achieve their goal to push the women and girls, especially the local players to play the sport and to be better at it.

The rugby tournament is an ongoing event for the local women and girls in the community.
