Teacher facing sex charges in custody
A 69-year-old teacher accused of indecently assaulting four young girls at a rural primary school has been remanded in custody until a date is set for his trial.
Sola Alimanu, a retired teacher from Ti'avea Primary School, appeared before the Supreme Court on Monday.
He had been arrested and locked in custody for breaching a condition of his bail.
Alimanu was prohibited from setting foot on Tiavea as part of his bail.
But he breached this condition.
The teacher is facing four sexual charges for allegedly touching the young girls’ breasts during the time he was a teacher at the school.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The complainants are aged 12 years and under with the youngest being 10 years old.
The names of the girls have been suppressed.
A bail application from the defense lawyer was opposed by prosecutor and Assistant Attorney General, Magele Leone Su’a.
Justice Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke adjourned the matter until 20 January 2020 to allow the Court Registrar to identify an earlier hearing date for the accused.
Alimanu was investigated by Police in April last year when one of the students told her mother that the male teacher allegedly pinched her breast when he disciplines the students.
The Principal of the school at the time, told the Samoa Observer that about seven students were being questioned by Police during their investigation.
She said the accused had been teaching at the school for over 30 years.
