There have been no fatalities in the measles epidemic over the last four days.

The Ministry of Health (M.O.H.) stated in an update on Sunday that the death toll currently stands at 81 which was recorded on December 25.

A total of 5,667 measles cases have so far been reported to the Ministry’s Disease Surveillance Team since the outbreak was declared in October this year.  

There has been a total of 12 cases recorded in the last 24 hours for Upolu with no new cases for Savai’i. 

There are currently 45 measles cases who have been admitted and are in-patients at all health facilities in the country.  Out of that total 37 are at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital (T.T.M.H.), two are at the Poutasi District Hospital, one is at the Lalomanu District Hospital, four are at the Foailalo District Hospital and one in Sataua. 

Hospital admissions include nine critically-ill children and one adult in ICU/HDU, one pregnant woman admitted to T.T.M.H. maternity ward and one pregnant woman admitted at the Poutasi District Hospital.

The Ministry said the total number of measles cases admitted to all hospitals recorded for the outbreak to date is 1,846 with 1,720 or 93 per cent of them discharged.

There has been no fatalities in the last 24 hours, added the M.O.H. which puts the total number of measles-related deaths unchanged at 81. 

As of December 28, the Ministry stated that approximately 95 per cent of all eligible people in Samoa have been vaccinated against measles.
