Falling tree trunk kills young man
A 23-year-old man of Gagaifo Lefaga has died after he could not overcome serious injuries to his head caused by a falling tree trunk.
The man has been identified as Feagai Fatialofa.
he died last Friday at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole National Hospital, Moto'otua.
He was admitted at the hospital on November 12 after a tree trunk he was trying to cut fell on his head and knocked him unconscious.
A brother of the deceased, Ajay Fatialofa, told the Samoa Observer that he was with him when the incident occurred and they rushed him to the hospital on the same day.
Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was immediately admitted at Moto'otua with Mr. Fatialofa indicating that the doctors advised of damage to his skull, including his brain and shoulder.
“We were told that his chances of surviving was very low but they went ahead with the surgery the next day,” he said.
The man died in the early hours of last Friday, leaving behind his girlfriend and a daughter.
His family are shocked and still trying to come to terms with his death, as he was supposed to leave to New Zealand for seasonal work, but opted to stay back to celebrate his daughter’s birthday in December.
Mr. Fatialofa said: “It’s sad that he’s now gone but his daughter was looking forward to her birthday and especially him because he stayed back for her.”
The deceased, who is the fifth of seven children and youngest of the boys, has a special bond with his brother Mr. Fatialofa.
“He’s always desperate to learn something new and we’re always sharing with each other about things and I taught him how to play volley which he’s now a pro at,” added Mr. Fatialofa.
The family is finalising funeral arrangements.
