Family needs iron roofing help
Losi Luka from Samusu, Aleipata, has only one wish.
He needs help with iron roofing for his house.
The 63-year-old shared to the Village Voice team that Tropical Cyclone Gita has caused his family to seek refuge in other people’s homes because their house was not safe.
The unemployed father mentioned that only he and his wife live together in an open Samoan house which was easily flooded, damaging their belongings.
“The only things that I need are some roofing irons for my house. My house was damaged by TC Gita,” he said.
“My house was completely soaked and the reason we have quickly fixed up the mess that was left by the cyclone was because we have nowhere else to live.”
Mr. Luka is grateful that TC Gita did not continue on after the weekend when it hit Samoa.
“All our suitcases and clothes were wet, together with our blankets, sheets and mattresses. The minute there was a bit of sunshine, we took all of our washing out to the sun to dry up.
“We also did a quick clean-up around our compound and home since we have no other house to live in,” he added.
He says his wife is the only one who works in their family, while he works the land for their plantation. This is their other source of income but it was destroyed by the cyclone.
“My wife works at this other family’s home that is not far from where we live, but it is our only source of income and we have no kids.
“I sell my crops which would usually amount up to $300 a day when I take it to the market.”
Mr. Luka believes life is costly if people do not work, but having such unexpected events such as TC Gita, they are left with no choice, but to suffer terribly because it is out of their control.
