KAWAGOE, Japan (AP) — Residents in this storm hit town north of Japan's capital are cleaning up after a powerful typhoon dumped massive rain and turned neighborhoods into swamps.

At one home Monday, residents were cleaning their dirt-covered front yard and sorting out mementos and furniture.

A 74-year-old retired glass glazier, Kazuo Saito, and his wife were cleaning their garage after the flood that had swollen almost to the garage ceiling.

At a nearby nursing home, dozens of elderly residents were evacuated on rubber boats.

Rescue efforts near mudslides and swollen rivers continued across storm-hit areas as workers looked for those still missing from the typhoon, which left more than 30 dead.

Typhoon Hagibis hit the region Saturday and left thousands of homes in central and northern Japan flooded, damaged or without power.
