Commissioner mum on internal surveillance allegation
The Police Commissioner, Fuiavailiili Egon Keil, has declined to comment on whether he had secretly been placed under surveillance by one of his own officers, who has been suspended for "misconduct".
Police sources say that disciplinary proceedings against Inspector Ituau Ale, who was suspended in early September for “misconduct”, will extend to allegations he was covertly surveilling the Commissioner without proper authorisation.
But when asked on Friday if he was aware of any such surveillance, Fuiavailiili declined to comment.
“That is a personnel matter I do not wish to discuss,” the Commissioner said.
Pressed about allegations that he was under surveillance by the accused officer, the Commissioner walked away, saying: "Thank you very much".
Contacted by this newspaper, Inspector Ale said he could not comment on the matter.
Inspector Ale was suspended together with Sergeant Shrikrishna Schwenke, who is currently facing criminal charges.
Schwenke is facing charges in relation to unlawful possession of ammunition and an unlawful firearm.
The hearing of the matter against Sergeant Schwenke is pending in the District Court.
Inspector Ale is not facing any criminal charges.
