South Africa dents RWC host Japan's confidence
KUMAGAYA, Japan (AP) — South Africa ran in six tries in a 41-7 win over Japan in a Rugby World Cup warmup game on Friday, denting the tournament host's confidence two weeks before kickoff.
Springboks left wing Makazole Mapimpi scored a hat trick, right wing Cheslin Kolbe scored two tries, and replacement scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies added the final try when he ran more than 50 meters.
Japan trailed 22-0 at halftime at Kumagaya Rugby Stadium and was never in position to repeat one of the biggest surprises in test rugby, when it beat the Springboks at the last World Cup.
Kotaro Matsushima scored Japan's only try after an hour but Mapimpi had completed his hat trick by then and South Africa was well ahead.
Japan opens the Rugby World Cup against Russia in Tokyo on Sept. 20.
