Savai'i students proud to be at Champ of Champs
The school athletics champions from Zone C in Savaii represented not just their schools but an entire island at the Cham of Champs school athletics contest in Apia on Friday.
Coach Eteuati Salamoa said the team's preparation was a little substandard due to a lack of training time but overall he was impressed with the team's performance.
"We only trained [at] the start of this term and we had like one month to prepare our athletes," he said.
He also said the athletes were had improved significantly at Apia Park on Friday compared to their performance at the Savai'i-wide Zone C contest earlier this month.
"Our boys performed good as they are taking part in the long distance events and so far two [have come in second] place," he said.
Star Savai'i school athlete, Donobvan Maiava, came to the contest after competing in the Pacific Games and undergoing training for elite young athletes in China.
Maiava took part in the 1500 meters, 800 meters and the 4 x 400 metre relay.
"With my training in China I felt more fit today, but today I came second," he added
He also told Samoa Observer with the training he had in China was very different to Vailoa College's normal programme.
"The training lesson that we [are] use[d] to do here, its not what we [did] at China during the four month we trained," he said,
Maiava added that after two hours' running he felt ready to throw in the towel.m
"Our coach told us that we should not give up," he said.
Salamoa said students who went to China gave him a lesson as well.
"They lead our training lessons in things that we don't focus on like training time and how to prepare for a event," he added.
